Many procurement professionals do not fully understand what these two-digit codes stand for, nor can they judge whether IP54 fits their cold-chain transport conditions. 2. What IP54 Means for Cold-chain Operations

IP5X (Dust protection): Dust-protected
Cold-storage rooms, shipping containers and transport trailers contain floating paper scraps and cargo dust. IP5X blocks large volumes of dust from entering the enclosure and prevents short-circuits caused by dust build-up on circuit boards. However, it is not hermetically sealed. Tiny amounts of dust may accumulate over time in heavily dusty environments and require periodic cleaning and maintenance.
IPX4 (Water protection): Splash-proof from all directions
The biggest water-related hazard inside cold-chain shipments is not rain, but condensation. Melting ice packs, dry-ice sublimation and drastic temperature swings produce heavy mist and condensate droplets that splash freely inside insulated containers. IPX4 reliably handles this condensate mist and splashes to keep loggers functioning normally.
Safe operating scenarios for IP54:
- Placed inside cold-chain containers or insulated boxes, exposed to condensate mist and splashing droplets
- Deployed in warehouses or yards with moderate dust levels
- Subjected to normal transit vibration and temperature-driven condensation
Operations you must NOT perform with IP54 devices:
- Do NOT submerge the device in water. IP54 offers no immersion protection; submersion will cause permanent water-related damage.
- Do NOT spray the logger housing directly with high-pressure water jets.
- In heavily dust-laden environments, dust will gradually build up; periodic disassembly and maintenance is required.
- Do NOT expose continuously to direct rainfall spray.
For general cross-border pharmaceutical, reagent and food shipments inside sealed containers, IP54 meets requirements for the vast majority of operating conditions. There is no need to blindly pursue higher IP ratings, as enhanced protection comes with increased procurement costs.
Select IP67-rated hardware if your devices face frequent ice-water splashes or risk accidental submersion. Choose IP65 or above if regular water washing is part of your workflow. A higher IP number does not automatically mean “better”. Always match the rating to your real-world operating conditions.
